Effective Communication

When it comes to affective communication, Mrs. Burnett comes to mind. She was one of my early childhood professors who is an extremely effective communicator. What made her effective is her clear calm voice, visible passion and sincerity whenever she talked about children, and most importantly her examples from her experience working with children. As a visual learner, I find abstract ideas hard to understand, thus without a realistic example, the concept is sometimes hard for me to grasp. Mrs. Burnett realistic stories, pictures, videos and sent us on observation assignments to facilitate our understanding of the subject matter. As a center director, I would certainly want to model some of my own communication behaviors after hers with my staff. I am a living proof of her effective communication skills because I remember what she taught me like it was yesterday even though I have learned it more than ten years ago.

  1. Hi Rola,

I agree with what you said, that an early childhood professional should be like Mrs. Burnett, with calm voice, passion and sincerity. You are lucky to have such a great model. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hello Rola,

Once again it is so nice to see your name again, and be working with you again this course. I really enjoyed your post on your former early childhood professor, Mrs. Burnett, she sounds like a wonderful educator, and also a wonderful mentor. I fully believe that having a good teacher, especially in regards to early childhood studies, really makes all the difference in the world. And that is because these are the people we are learning from, and when they are knowledgeable, as well as enthusiastic about their work, then that definitely rubs off on us as students. I too had some great professors when I first started this field more than twenty years ago, and they really had a positive and lasting effect on me, both personally and professionally. And they really helped reaffirm at least for me, that I was definitely headed in the right direction and also into the right field. Good luck & Great Job!
