The Qur’an is the holy book of Muslims. As a practicing Muslim, this book represents the most important part of my identity, my religion. Reading in this book will help me preserve my religious identity as well as my Arabic language.
Next, I would pack my father’s will. When my father
passed away, he left my siblings and I three- page will that I regard as pearls
of wisdom, his life lessons and advice wrapped in a small package. These pages
are what lift me up when I am down, guide me when I am lost, and give me
courage to pursue my dreams.
Last, I would pack my grandmother’s recipe book. As I
make her traditional recipes, I would be reminded of the rich culture I left
behind and the happy memories each meal brought to my family.
It would a mixed feeling of sorrow and anger if upon
arrival to the host country, I was told to give up two of the three items. However,
my choice would definitely be to keep the Holy book of Qur’an over anything
else as without my religion, I have no identity.
As a result of this exercise, I gained so much
insight into my own identity. It was extremely hard to choose three items. I thought
narrowing it down to three would be the challenge, however; once I started
examining my connection to each item, I found it easy to choose what truly represents
me.
Rola, your blog gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes. I can relate to your choices, especially your father's will. When my mom passed away, we were unable to locate her will; she told me on numerous occasions that she left some very specific thoughts for each of us. I still find myself searching for it. Rola, she did, however, leave 2 envelopes, one for my sister and one for me. Inside the envelope was a poem about living life and how she hopes we can be strong. I guess I'm still not that strong, because I have yet to read the entire poem. It's in my drawer, and I hold the envelope sometimes, looking at her writing. I miss her terribly, Rola. Hold tight to your father's words; they come with a lot of strength. Thank you for sharing an inner part of yourself with us this week...
ReplyDeleteHi Rola, I enjoyed reading your blog. We have to hold on to our memories of family and special events that happens in our lives. Without memories we have nothing.
ReplyDeleteRola,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your Blog this week it was very touching, Especially your comments about you father and his will. Obviously your father was a very wise and thoughtful man, whose children and family meant a great deal to him. Even though your father is no longer here with you, I think you and your siblings are very lucky to have such a precious memento of him. And I think his precious gift of words and wisdom is also a great indication and constant reminder of what a wise and knowledgeable man he must have been, you are very blessed. Thank-you for sharing your loving memories and your father's great wisdom.
Sylvia

Thank you for sharing what you would take with you. It is the little things in life that we realize we couldn't live without. I too found it difficult to start with what I would bring but once you have one you know what really means the most to you in your life.
